Hat & Fascinator Colour Palette for 2013

Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

With Moda UK quickly approaching, Richard Designs HQ is a hive of activity preparing everything for the launch of our new collection.

New hats and fascinators will be shown for the first time at Moda this weekend (12th – 14th August) at the NEC, all inspired by the 1950s. As well as the stunning new styles, current bestsellers will be available to see in our new occasionwear colour palette for Spring Summer 2013.

As Head Designer Kelly shared in her reveal of the inspiration behind this collection, new colours include the soft pastel shades of the 1950s.

Occasionwear Colour PaletteYou can see that the coral, papaya, opal grey, duck egg and sweet pea shades are soft and feminine, with hints of more powerful red and deep violet added for contrast.

Occasionwear Colour Palette

The Boutique Collection is renowned for its impressive colour matching service (which is complementary on request with every order). Over 7,000 shades of colour can be reached through our special colour mixing process. This means that your headwear can match your outfit exactly, creating a stand out look.

To see the new collection and the new colour palette, trade customers can visit Moda UK this weekend 12th – 14th August at the NEC Birmingham.

Dress your Dress: Accessories for the Races

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Royal Ascot is almost here, but there is still just enough time to get your hat and fascinator orders in before then. Each of the Boutique Collection hats and fascinators is made by hand here in the UK. We have highly skilled milliners who are experts in colour matching and attention to detail. Kelly, our millinery designer, has paired these outfits and head-wear together to help you see the spectacular effects that can be achieved.

Of course it is not just Royal Ascot that has a Ladies’ Day, but you will be pleased to hear that there are several opportunities to put your best outfit together and make a statement! We have put together a list of Ladies’ Days around the UK, which you can see at the bottom of this post.

Perfect Outfits for the Races

Coast + FQ152

This Elvira dress from Coast is the perfect mix of sophistication and fun with it’s fuchsia embroidery and asymmetrical shoulder detailing. We’ve chosen to match it with our FQ152 Fascinator in fuchsia and silver lake, which fits perfectly with the flower detail and colour. This fascinator sits on the side of the head, which works well with the shoulder ruffle. We love this combination for girls who want to stay cool and have some fun at the races!

Mon Cheri + FQ93

This lace dress (style 111814) from Mon Cheri is gorgeous with it’s shimmering deep blue colour. We have paired it with our FQ93 disc fascinator which is perfect for the races with a large flower on the top, and detailing peeking from under the brim. The delicate chevron feathers frame the whole hat perfectly. We have chosen this fascinator in French Navy, Sapphire and Navy.

Linea Raffaelli + BM167H

Linea Raffaelli is a name synonymous with sophistication and elegance with a modern edge. This outfit is not only ideal for mother of the bride but also for occasions such as the races. We love the deep red jacket and waist detail and have chosen to pick up the colour in this hat BM167H with black sinamay and red silk. This hat reflects the elegance in the Linea Raffaelli dress with a sharp angular shape, but delicate feather and flower detail. The BM167H hat also has a stunning large Swarovski stone in the centre of the flower which will shine spectacularly in the sunshine on Ladies’ Day!

Jaego + FQ151

This fun, on-trend black and white outfit from Jaego calls for an equally fun fascinator. We have chosen the FQ151 with a large sequined bow to mimic the tie around shrug. This is an ideal outfit for someone who wants to keep it classic but with a twist.

Gina Bacconi + FQ103

We love this simple leopard print dress from Gina Bacconi. Paired with our quirky fascinator FQ103 it is sure to make a statement.

Michaela Louisa + BM170H

Michaela Louisa have achieved a simple yet stunning effect with this dress (Style 7120). The black rose print on the luxurious blue fabric pairs beautifully with the rose detail on the BM170H hat which we have chosen to show in Royal and Ocean sinamay, Black organza and Black feathers. The large sweeping feather finishes off the hat perfectly and ensures you won’t go unnoticed.

How to choose a hat for the races

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Are you going to Royal Ascot or another race meeting this summer? It can be a tough (but fun!) job to find a hat that not only wows your friends but also works with your outfit. That’s why we’ve put together these tips to help you choose the perfect hat or fascinator for the races.

Think about proportions

When choosing your hat, try to keep in mind it’s proportions in comparison to you! You may be surprised that a taller or larger lady can carry off a larger hat that perhaps a smaller or more petite person cannot wear. Keep your hat balanced with your height and you will be on to a winner.

See here for more tips on which hat shape will suit you best

Hat Shapes

Colour is key

Colour is one of the most important things to look for when choosing a hat. If you go to your local boutique to buy your hat and outfit together you will find a better match than if you buy the finished items separately. Boutiques will often have chosen their millinery in complementing colours to match the outfits that they stock, so you will be sure to find something that works. If you have found a hat you love elsewhere then see if it can be made especially for you and colour matched to your outfit, for a seamless look that is sure to impress.

Remember that your hat or fascinator does not have to be in the same colour as your outfit. You could choose a floral print dress and pick one colour from it for your hat, shoes and bag. Alternatively you could have a simple black dress and pair it with a silver hat and other accessories for a stunning contrasting look. Come back over the next few weeks to see our favourite outfits and the colours we would accessorise them with!

Ask if your boutique stocks the Boutique Collection by Richard Designs as we offer a complementary colour matching service for our Boutique Collection Hats & Fascinators. Your local boutique can send in a swatch or your entire outfit and we will choose the perfect combination of colours to work with your look.

Make a statement!

A day at the races is the perfect opportunity to wear an unusual or flamboyant style and really make a statement! Try something different and be confident! If you want to keep it simple and timeless, choose a classic shaped hat or fascinator with a twist.

See our gallery of hats and fascinators perfect for the races, chosen by our milliner Kelly.

Royal Ascot Outfit Ruffles

Try different fabrics

Experimenting with textures is a great way to add some interest to your hat. This is especially true this season with designers incorporating ruffles and pleats into their outfits. Hat or fascinator trims don’t have to be silk and feathers, but can be crin, lace, sequins or even crystal encrusted.

Ruffles and texture is key in our latest collection. See the trends for the current season here

Make sure you are comfortable

You will need to wear your hat or fascinator for a good few hours and it would be a shame to put all of this effort in choosing only to take it off after you arrive.

A fascinator mounted on a band really is the best way to wear it. A band makes sure that is is comfortable and easy to wear in the correct position. The best thing is – no one need know your fascinator is even on a band! It is very easy to push the fine band into your hair, and we can even make them in the colour of your hair so that they are invisible.

Our fascinators are so easy to wear with the most comfortable bands around, which can be made in a colour to blend into your hair. If the fascinator is too big, gently pull the ends of the band towards each other to make it sit snugly on your head.

Experiment with your hair

Wearing a hat or fascinator doesn’t mean you are resigned to hiding your hairstyle. If you have long hair, try a side bun or curled side ponytail for an up-to-date look. Loose, soft waves can also sit comfortably and stylishly under a hat.
