Moda August 2011: Inspirations for AW11 & SS12 Hats & Fascinators

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

With only days to go until we take the new collection of Boutique Collection hats and fascinators to the Moda Show in Birmingham (14-16 August), this week’s blogs are all about hats and fascinators. Don’t forget we will be on stand G14 (our usual position) and we would love to see you there to show you our new styles!

Today we share with you the inspiration for the new collection, including the new colour trends for occasion wear’s Autumn Winter 2011 & Spring Summer 2012 collections, from our Head Designer Kelly.

Autumn Winter 2011

Autumn Winter 11 Occasionwear Moodboard

The look for the Autumn 2011 is a mix of heritage classics with vintage glamour, epitomised through the use of rustic jewel tones and luxurious fabrics to create glamorous eveningwear, and deconstructed classic elements within occasion wear

‘Vintage ladylike decorum and Cinematic elegance’ sums up the mood of 2011, and with 1940’s silhouettes and accessories inspiring new collections The Boutique Collection takes loose inspiration from the details and shapes of 1940’s millinery. Knot constructions which are reminiscent of the drape detail on turban style headwear of this era feature, while vintage trims and accent details will give that eclectic look, without appearing fussy.

With the emphasis on prints in occasion wear fashion, our collection will combine unusual textures and tonal block colours that will complement busy prints.

‘Rustic jewel tones and heritage colours’ are prevalent on catwalks this autumn/winter, so our collection takes inspiration from the colour trends that are appearing within catwalk and occasion wear collections for the autumn.

  • Marigold, a burnished gold and Winter Pink will be combined with our new Indian Pink crystal and our Daffodil and Geranium silks.
  • Pumpkin Orange, a rich golden tan, Poppy Red and Deep Purple will be combined with our new Dark Indigo crystal and Indigo silk.
  • Sea Green, Cognac Browns, and Mallard Green, are accented with brown and milk.
  • Introduced to the collection are heritage colour silks such as Hazel, Leek and Beeswax, combined with Antique Plum and Zinc.

Spring Summer 2012

Spring Summer 12 Occasionwear Moodboard

Spring focuses on the fruitful abundance of colour, pattern and form provided by nature to inspire fashion!

We have combined the key trend elements from the catwalk to produce accessories that will complement the forthcoming fashion collections for spring 2012. Our focus has been on the 1940’s and 50’s for millinery influences and trim details. We will combine elements of the eclectic use of nature-inspired trims and colours, with the comforting textures and luxurious fabric trends popular within the said eras, to create classic, yet contemporary millinery designs.

The Colour palette for Spring/summer 2012 is a Colour Symphony, performing harmonies of soft pastels with a crescendo of mid-tones and lyrical accents. Available in the most luxurious fabrics, tactile textures and organic forms, the new collections are sure to be full of inspiring classic shapes, reinvented for eclectic, contemporary millinery hits!

Dress your Dress: Accessories for the Races

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

Royal Ascot is almost here, but there is still just enough time to get your hat and fascinator orders in before then. Each of the Boutique Collection hats and fascinators is made by hand here in the UK. We have highly skilled milliners who are experts in colour matching and attention to detail. Kelly, our millinery designer, has paired these outfits and head-wear together to help you see the spectacular effects that can be achieved.

Of course it is not just Royal Ascot that has a Ladies’ Day, but you will be pleased to hear that there are several opportunities to put your best outfit together and make a statement! We have put together a list of Ladies’ Days around the UK, which you can see at the bottom of this post.

Perfect Outfits for the Races

Coast + FQ152

This Elvira dress from Coast is the perfect mix of sophistication and fun with it’s fuchsia embroidery and asymmetrical shoulder detailing. We’ve chosen to match it with our FQ152 Fascinator in fuchsia and silver lake, which fits perfectly with the flower detail and colour. This fascinator sits on the side of the head, which works well with the shoulder ruffle. We love this combination for girls who want to stay cool and have some fun at the races!

Mon Cheri + FQ93

This lace dress (style 111814) from Mon Cheri is gorgeous with it’s shimmering deep blue colour. We have paired it with our FQ93 disc fascinator which is perfect for the races with a large flower on the top, and detailing peeking from under the brim. The delicate chevron feathers frame the whole hat perfectly. We have chosen this fascinator in French Navy, Sapphire and Navy.

Linea Raffaelli + BM167H

Linea Raffaelli is a name synonymous with sophistication and elegance with a modern edge. This outfit is not only ideal for mother of the bride but also for occasions such as the races. We love the deep red jacket and waist detail and have chosen to pick up the colour in this hat BM167H with black sinamay and red silk. This hat reflects the elegance in the Linea Raffaelli dress with a sharp angular shape, but delicate feather and flower detail. The BM167H hat also has a stunning large Swarovski stone in the centre of the flower which will shine spectacularly in the sunshine on Ladies’ Day!

Jaego + FQ151

This fun, on-trend black and white outfit from Jaego calls for an equally fun fascinator. We have chosen the FQ151 with a large sequined bow to mimic the tie around shrug. This is an ideal outfit for someone who wants to keep it classic but with a twist.

Gina Bacconi + FQ103

We love this simple leopard print dress from Gina Bacconi. Paired with our quirky fascinator FQ103 it is sure to make a statement.

Michaela Louisa + BM170H

Michaela Louisa have achieved a simple yet stunning effect with this dress (Style 7120). The black rose print on the luxurious blue fabric pairs beautifully with the rose detail on the BM170H hat which we have chosen to show in Royal and Ocean sinamay, Black organza and Black feathers. The large sweeping feather finishes off the hat perfectly and ensures you won’t go unnoticed.

Boutique Collection Hats at the Royal Wedding

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

In the weeks prior to William and Kate’s Royal Wedding we made some beautiful hats and fascinators for the guests. While the wedding was being broadcast live on TV, we spotted the stunning Boutique Collection hat style BM57H that we had carefully colour matched to the guest’s outfit. You can see it in the front row as Catherine Middleton walked past!

We are so pleased that the hat looked so fantastic with the beautiful silk jacket that we had colour matched to. Thank you to our stockist No. 25 of Bourne End for these pictures.

We also spotted our bestselling BM179H in the abbey!

Silver & Black Hat BM179H

We work really hard to make sure that all of our hats and fascinators are made to the highest of standards. Our skilled milliners take the greatest of care to ensure that each hat is crafted perfectly, and colour matched to your outfit. Our colour matching service is free-of-charge and very simple to take advantage of: simply send us a swatch of fabric or your entire outfit and we will create your hat or fascinator especially for you and then return your garments safe and sound. Manufacturing in England gives us the flexibility to truly cater to your needs, and we are proud to be supporting the UK’s millinery industry.

The royal red carpet outside Westminster Abbey was a hotspot for fashionable ladies and gents, not least the celebrity guests but the noble gentry dressed to impress! The fashion forward guests donned top designer labels with suitably tasteful designer hats. Some of my favourite examples of trend-led designs were worn by the sister of Lord Frederick Windsor, Lady Gabriella, and the elegant wife of Crown Prince Pavlos, Crown Princess Marie-Chantal.

Stylish and flattering, both styles are a tilted disc form with feature antique-style silk roses at the point where it meets the head. Styles such as these were featured heavily at the wedding with the Mother of the Bride Carole Middleton wearing a slightly more reserved disc Hattenator. Designed by Milliner Jane Corbett to compliment her Catherine Walker ensemble, it had matching satin piping and frog braid detail at the front, and too had focal detail at the ‘under-crown’.

Maintaining the trend for asymmetric hattenators, royal style icon Zara Phillips chose a gunmetal coloured buckram disc with accentuated crown and twist side detail, by royal milliner and celebrity favourite, Philip Treacy.

Even the more senior ladies of the royal family were eager to show their inner fashionista with Queen Sofia and Camilla sporting uniquely transparent styles. With these examples the brim reaches higher than the crown but is made from an open weave, or ‘waffle’ sinamay to allow for a semi-transparent effect across the crown. Soft muted colours such as Taupe, Duck egg blue and Ivory were warming for their skin tones and very demure for the older lady.

Having said that I think that we were all pleasantly pleased to see the Queen in such a joyful spring shade of Primrose. Many others and myself were convinced it would be blue, but Her Royal Majesty dressed to reflect the mood of the day perfectly, splashing out the sunshine tone in an Angela Kelly ensemble. The hat itself was very traditional with silk ribbon roses and it appeared to be made from felt as opposed to the popular summer fabric sinamay. She wore the Queen Mary’s True Lovers Knot brooch upon her coat lapel, in keeping with the happy occasion!

Although there were many contemporary trend led shapes at the wedding, it was also nice to see shapes from past fashion trends. I particularly loved this 1970’s inspired hat worn by Prince Albert of Monaco’s bride-to-be Charlene Wittstock. It is simple yet sophisticated and the floppy shaped brim with shallow domed crown is reminiscent of the casual styled sun hats that were featured at London fashion week and that are so on-trend at present!

It was Retro style for Crown Princess Letizia. Influenced clearly by the 1940’s this almost Cloche style hat is a vintage triumph and the inclusion of lace and millinery face veil, finishes the look perfectly, well done Pablo y Mayaya!

When I spotted this Fascinator worn by Frances Osborne, I was instantly reminded of the fashion image by Henry Clarke, very retro fifties glamour! The statement coque feathers with their natural markings are classic and the combination of black and white is striking.

Fascinators are still a popular choice for wedding guests and race-goers alike, and it was nice to see a variety of styles, many of them refreshingly different from the classic sinamay twist with a few feathers!

Here are some of my favourites…

Victoria Beckham Royal Wedding HatImage from here

I particularly love the the mix of textures in the examples worn by Prince William’s cousins, and the floral elements juxtaposed against the more gnarly forms. As ever Victoria Beckham is setting tends, with influxes of requests for her style of mini-hat/fascinator, I’m sure this new style will prove popular, although maybe only for a limited time!

Hats were predominant throughout the sea of colour and feathers, and as the cameras panned around Westminster Abbey, it was refreshing to see the variety of styles and shapes worn by the dignitary. A surprise for me was the number of shallow domed crowns with curved, smooth lined brims, that had been blocked as one piece. They were almost oriental in their style, yet stylish and contemporary! There were also plenty of traditional shapes on show, and many very similar in shape to the popular designs that we have to offer in our Boutique range! Below we see a guest wearing what appears to be an Ann Balon two-piece, an occasion-wear designer that feature our coordinated hats in their new catalogue!

Whatever the event there are no excuses not to wear a hat or fascinator. They are the best way to finish off an outfit, express your personality, and can really make statement about your style.

Remember to choose a style that suits you and you feel comfortable in, and always carefully colour match your accessories. An outfit can be ruined by a mis-matched hat or fascinator, so contact us and we will be happy to prevent any fashion mishaps with our colour matching service!

Happy Hat Hunting!!!
